Levi’s Workwear x Billy Reid: Behind the Scenes
partnering with the GQ recipient of "Best New Menswear Designer in America," Levi's new line incorporates classic elements and bits of perfection that help create what Billy Reid affectionately refers to as "heirloom pieces" - something you can pass down through your family. the craftsmanship of the clothing is immaculate, with every detail scrutinized and considered for the long term, "the needle that you put on it. how that needle digs in the fabric and creates wear over time."
Marquis Montes: Heidi Marie
i adore everything about this one. photographer Marquis Montes created this video while conducting a photo shoot. the classic feel and elegance of the piece is unmistakable. partnered with a quality soundtrack, the substance of the video far surpasses that of the photos taken from the same shoot. a superb production all around!
Marlow & Daughters – NYC Butchery
i find it incredible that of all the places in the U.S., New York City is standing loud and proud, declaring their desire to have food sourced and prepared locally. more and more boutiques are popping up all over the city, specializing in local foods. one butchery in particular defies conventional standards by working exclusively with whole-animals obtained from nearby farms. the cuts are made to the liking of locals and the rapport between Marlow & Daughters and the people of the neighborhood leaves a lingering hometown feeling.
RETNA & EL MAC: Of Our Youth
RETNA and EL MAC put up serious murals. impressed with the work they did on the RVCA headquarters, the skate company turned their video cameras on the duo again as the paint sprayed on the Graphaids art supply store in Culver City. the piece was inspired by Ralph Woodruff aka "Chato", a man the pair met while spending time in Skid Row. despite the hardships he's encountered, Chato reamains optimistic and it was his disposition on life that encouraged the two to create the piece above. The text was taken from a conversation they had with Chato and reads, “So today I’m trying to change a few things to rectify the situation of my past. So today I’m looking towards the future (of our youth highlighted).”
Lowriding with Mister Cartoon and Danny Trejo
perhaps just as or maybe even more beautiful than apple pie and baseball is America's infatuation with the automobile. from auto shows to drag races to Saturday night cruisin', cars have brought this nation together in ways other activities cannot. Soul Assassins Studios brings us together with Danny Trejo and Mister Cartoon to help us understand the bond between lowriding and East L.A.
California is a Place: Godspeed Courier
hands down, California is a Place is producing some of the most intriguing and well executed short documentaries today. with subjects ranging from the real estate market collapse to the manufacturer of the most life-like sex dolls on the planet, the focus of California is a Place is as diverse as the state itself. with such a range of subject matter at its fingertips, expect more fascinating explorations to come. i particularly enjoy their short foray into the world of Godspeed Courier, a bicycle messenger service featured in the video posted above.
Microsoft: Red Bull Flugtag Competitor
technology giant Microsoft has been working diligently on their entry to this year's Red Bull Flugtag competition. the team hopes to beat the competition's flight record of 207 feet. built from lightweight materials mostly found in the local Home Depot hardware store, they believe their rudimentary knowledge of flight and construction will help them place well in the event. read more about it over at the Seattle Times!
Joaquin Phoenix, I’m Still Here (trailer)
just released: the trailer for Casey Affleck's highly anticipated documentary focusing on Joaquin Phoenix's lost year. despite the great deal of controversy around his change in pace (drugs? depression? it's all a joke?) one thing is for sure - Joaquin is embarking on a new chapter. i'm anxious to see what will unfold next!
